On Wheels 굴러가며 (gulleogamyeo) is a non-fiction film accompanied by music and partly animated, inspired by musically scored silent films. The farmhouse in South Korea’s Jeollabuk-do Province now stands uninhabited. Haraboji (Korean for “grandfather”), the last remaining member of a nine-person family, is unexpectedly hospitalized during the filming. To fulfill his wish to return home, his granddaughter — the filmmaker — creates a miniature figure of him and places it on a remote-controlled car resembling his disused quad bike. Through this small figure, she guides the audience through the house and its surroundings, revealing through handwritten texts and her own narration, the family’s history, where time, memory, and nature intertwine. As overgrowth and stray animals reclaim the place, she uncovers layers of personal and collective transformation, reflecting on rural change through the lens of her family’s story.
