Description

Established in 2008, A MAZE. is an international arthouse label for games and playful media including independent and alternative game projects, virtual realities, and other digital playful work.

A MAZE.’s mission is to represent the current experimental and artistic movement of thoughtful and reflective content in playful content, games, virtual reality, and playful media.

Brief History of A MAZE.

Thorsten S. Wiedemann and Michael Liebe founded A MAZE. in 2008, running different game culture formats and festivals.
Since 2012 Thorsten S. Wiedemann is owner and registered the business entity A MAZE. GmbH and the brand “A MAZE.”
Both A MAZE. / Berlin and A MAZE. / Johannesburg officially started in 2012
A MAZE. / Berlin was formally called A MAZE. Indie Connect for 2012 and 2013

As of 2026, the categories are

Digital Moment Award

The award for interactive pieces that express poems, statements, experiments, short experiences, expressions of socio-critical messages, personal or comedic life situations, and feelings.

Human Human Machine Award

The award for multiplayer games that include some digital element. (Fully analogue games won’t be accepted)

Long Feature Award

The award for complex games and virtual reality worlds that challenge our lives by offering immersive storytelling.

Explorer Award

The award for all forms of experiences beyond the boundaries of contemporary ways to play or develop games. These forms of experiences would include alternative controllers, interactive installations, creative coding experiments, robotics, and tech performances, as well as work made by interdisciplinary teams, collaborations with science, makers, engineers, researchers, theater, and writers.

Audience Award

The winner will be voted by the public during the course of the festival. Every visitor gets 3 votes to vote for their favorite game at A MAZE. / Berlin.

Most Amazing Award

The grand prize of the A MAZE. Awards awarded to the most relevant, forward-thinking, interactive and playful content. This prize is dedicated to the masterpiece of the award selection that shows us a path we never walked before.

The award for games from women, gender marginalized developers, and teams led by women or gender marginalized members.

XR History Award by Körber-Stiftung eCommemoration.
A biennial award initiated by Körber-Stiftung’s eCommemoration programme, honouring projects using immersive technology to explore artistic approaches to history-telling, history education, and commemorative culture.
